SSK Human Rights Forum held its 56th workshop at Ewha Womans University’s POSCO Building on May 18 2018. This workshop was titled “Sharing the Ethical Values to Respect Life”. IAEOT (International Association for Ethical Organ Transplants) introduced the problem of involuntary organ transplants in China and shared their efforts to end this organ harvesting.

In the first part of the workshop, the participants watched a short documentary called “Medical Genocide” produced by China Organ Harvest Research Center and a PTS news video clip which introduced the issue of organ transplants in China. According to the films, China performs the most organ transplants in the world. But where do the organs come from? Based on a decade of research, the documentary film argues that these organs are from death row prisoners including religious and ethnic minorities in China.

Next, a member of IAEOT gave a short presentation on how organ harvesting became a serious problem in China. The Chinese government started to use organs from executed prisoners for transplants in 1984. Although the Chinese government declared that the practice was banned, there is no evidence that this has really happened. These concerns are fueled by the publication of two investigative books Bloody Harvest and The Slaughter. The authors estimate that at least 60,000 organs are transplanted in China every year and most of them are from imprisoned religious and ethnic minorities.
This is not just a domestic concern for China. There are an increasing number of foreign patients who went to China for illegal organ transplants. Among the foreign patients who undergo organ transplantation in China, the largest number consists of Koreans. However, the Korean government has failed to take effective measures to solve the problem. That is why IAEOT launched a campaign for revising the law on illegal organ transplant overseas.
This workshop was a unique opportunity to talk about a less known but very important problem. Participants agreed that simply criticizing China is not enough to eradicate organ harvesting. Many desperate foreign patients go to China for immediate organ transplants to save their lives. There is also lots of work to be done on that front. We hope that the efforts of IAEOT will pay off soon. We extend many thanks to IAEOT and all the sponsors and participants who made this workshop possible.
